Investing in property abroad - it seems to make more sense with each passing day

After what has unanimously been called the worst week in the markets since 1987 (or perhaps earlier) the reasons for looking at overseas property as a home for your investment seem to have grown even further. I appear not to be alone in thinking this (see this article in the Times).   I can think of at least three good reasons to include property abroad in any portfolio:
