The town of Santa Luzia, lying south of the city of Tavira in the eastern Algarve does not possess its own proper swimming beach owing to the sandbanks just offshore. However, just 500 m out of town is the departure point for a small train that takes visitors through the marshes of Ilha da Tavira to one of the most beautiful beaches in the eastern Algarve, the Praia do Barril. It is a wide and spacious beach where even nude bathing has secretly established itself, something that is generally not permissible in Portugal. There is also a bridge that leads from the western end of Santa Luzia to Praia do Barril. There is a small restaurant and sunshades for rent. Diving and windsurfing facilities are also available.
