Essaouira, Morocco
Essaouira, or the ‘windy city’ is one of Morocco’s most enchanting coastal towns. Inside its whitewashed medina lies a city that has been influenced by a host of cultures including Barber, Portuguese and Carthaginian. At sundown at the port you can witness a hive of activity with boats unloading their catches, bustling fish auctions and stalls serving seafood on sizzling grills. Haggle for bargains at a string of souks where you’ll find one of the town’s specialities, sculptured wood made from the roots of the Thuya tree. This is the city where Orson Welles filmed Othello in 1949.
