Medical care in Bulgaria

Medical Assistance in Bulgaria

Comprehensive medical cover should be taken out prior to travelling to Bulgaria. This should be for the full duration of your stay and should include medivac to the UK.

Although some initial emergency treatment will be given for free, you are likely to be charged for the majority of your medical expenses. You will also have to pay for tests, investigation, medication and overnight stays in hospitals. This is why travel insurance is paramount.

Most of the facilities in Bulgarian hospitals are often described as out of date and very basic. The medical care provided in Bulgaria is deemed as acceptable, although if you require specialist treatment for a long term illness you may be unable to find the facilities there. It is also worth pointing out that the majority of hospital staff will not speak English.

Even though Bulgaria entered the EU in 2007, it will take some time for changes to happen in this area. Once this has occurred this information will be up dated accordingly
