Utilities in Romania

Electricity.

The electricity supply is 220V, 50 Hz. Two pin round continental type plugs are generally used.

Water.

Tap water in cities and towns is of variable quality and may be discoloured at certain times of the year. It is therefore recommended that you drink bottled water.

Gas.

LPG  is now widely available for heating and can be delivered to fixed tanks. Shell and PECO supply this but it can be the most expensive form of heating though the most reliable. Getting a tank installed and fitted is also very expensive.

Heating oil.

Heating oil is widely used throughout Romania. The word for heating oil is Motorina like the car diesel. But the correct way to request heating oil is ‘Motorina, combustible tip M, pentru cazan de incalzaire centrala’ this means ‘diesel oil type M combustible, for central heating tanks. It is also worth being aware that some suppliers may illegally add water to the diesel to water it down, so it is therefore worth using only a reputable supplier. PECO are one of these, but do not approach a garage and request this as they will confuse this with with car diesel. You will need to contact PECO head office or ‘depozit (store) and go there to make an order, it will then be delivered
