Internet in Spain

If you are buying a property in Spain you may want to know about the internet. Spain’s Internet usage has climbed quickly in recent years with nearly 20 million users as of January 2007.  Broadband is still somewhat lower than the overall EU market average penetration.

ADSL Internet service providers in Spain include Ya.com, Terra, Wanadoo, and others. Prices are around 29 €/month (Feb 2007) although you can get a bundled package with Internet and phone service for less.

Cable Internet service is a good alternative to ADSL internet, but not all areas are covered.

Dial-up Internet. The internet is free in Spain—at least until you get your phone bill. Local calls are not free. An alternative is to sign up for Tarifa plana which means you pay a flat rate to the ISP rather than paying for the local calls. The rates depend on whether you include peak time or not. Ya.com and Wanadoo offer various rates depending on how many hours of peak time you plan to use.

Wireless or wifi technology is being taken up quickly in Spain. Spain is currently ranked 10th in the world for wifi internet usage. Wifi hotspots can be found more and more commonly in major centres,  with cafes like Starbucks offer their connections through partners that charge you by the hour.

G3 Internet - Vodafone’s 3G network is now in operation in Spain offering internet connection.
