Language and lifestyle in Mexico

Spanish is spoken in Mexico by 94% of the population and is used for all official purposes. English is widely used in business, at the border cities as well as by the one million American citizens who reside in Mexico. Other European languages that are spoken in Mexico include Venetian, Palutdietsch, German, French and Romani.

 

Tipping in Mexico is customary. This is because the wages that most employees recieve are minimal, and they rely on the tips to subsidize their income. It is also expected in return for good service. As a result it is worth keeping a small supply of loose change on you.

 

Restaurants, bars and cantinas tend to expect around a 10% - 15% tip. Most car parks in Mexico have a parking attendant. These attendants will be either male or female and will wear a security guard type uniform.

They will expect a small tip; this will normally be around 3 pesos. Some establishments have valet parking. Around $1 or the equivalent in Pesos in sufficient. You may find that they advertise the cost of there service, if so pay the amount advertised will be expected. All hotels will have maids, bell boys and a concierge service. A tip of $1 or the equivalent in Pesos in normally sufficient. If you wish to tip the maid then leave the money in the room after checking out.
