Education in France
There are many education options available to you in France. Private schooling does exist but the state school system is widely seen as one of the best in Europe.
Schooling ages start early in France. Children from the age of 3 will be able to attend the “ecole maternelle”. During the first 2 years of the Childs education the education system concentrates on their intellectual and social skills and during the final year the children are introduced to reading, writing and arithmetic. In France the secondary schooling system begins with year six (or “sixeme”) this is when the children will be expected to start learning a foreign language.
Sixth Form College or “lycee” consists of three years education, the students will be expected to earn a Baccalaureat, and this is the French equivalent of the English A-level.
State run universities are able to award state degrees.
University institutes of technology are privately run; however they do offer more choice of courses.
Courses may be described as BAC+3 or BAC+5. This states how long, in years, the student will have to spend completing the course.
English schooling in France.If you choose to have your child educated in either English or bilingually you may have to send them to a private international school.
You will need some documents when you register your child at a school. This applies in both private and state funded schools…
- A livret de famille or birth certificate.
- Proof of address such as a utility bill.
- Proof of residence or parent’s passport. Proof of residence is known as a carte de residence or carte de sejour.
- Proof of immunisation known as a carnet de sante.
