Driving in Bulgaria

Care is needed whilst driving in Bulgaria, particularly at night. Many of the roads in Bulgaria are in poor condition. Sadly car jacking is becoming a more frequent problem in Bulgaria and it has been noticed that foreigners are becoming a target. If you have decided to cross Bulgaria by car it would be safest to travel in daylight hours only.

Toll roads are often found in Bulgaria. These tolls are payable in euros. The 2007 rate for a car is 5 euros for a 1 week vignette. Vignettes can be bought from ports, border points, post offices and DZI banks. Fines will be issued to people who do not have a Vignette.

On the spot fines are issued for minor driving offences. The minimum age for children to travel in the front of a vehicle is 12 and there are currently no seatbelt laws.

Bulgaria has recently implemented a new law that states you have to place a special sticker on your car to drive on the highways. You have to get this sticker from the border whilst entering Bulgaria. This sticker system is expected to be revoked during 2007.

When travelling by car, be sure you can read the Cyrillic (Rusian) alphabet at least a little. Most signs in eastern Bulgaria don’t have direction shown in Latin letters, so it may become difficult for you if you decide to travel around.
