Balchik is a town and seaside resort in a beautiful small bay on the North Black sea coast of Bulgaria. Balchik is 31 km North of Varna, 37 km south-east of Dobrich and 500 km East from Sofia. The exceptional view of the town from the sea impressed the great Ovid who exclaimed: "O white stone town, I salute thee for thy inimitable beauty!" and the Milesian colonists believed that the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, was born there out of the sea foam.
The Balchik town has many historic and natural attractions and narrow beach strips. A main attraction in Balchik is the Palace complex built in 1924-1931 and the botanical garden, which is the biggest and most diverse on the Balkans. There are more than 3,000 rare and exotic species of plants in the botanic garden. The town is attractive with its ancient atmosphere that has been preserved for centuries. It is interesting to walk around the Tatar Quarter with the pebbled streets and the houses made of stone and adobe. The Art Gallery in Balchik which also houses the museum is also an interesting place to visit. There is also a beautiful old church called St. Nikola Church.
