About Bodrum
Bodrum is built on a peninsula formed by the meeting of the eastern and western harbours. The narrow streets of Bodrum wind down to the sea from the hillside which is covered in painted villas adorned with bougainvillea plants. Bodrum is a focal point for local boats offering day trips to nearby islands or the beaches and seaside restaurants along the coastline. Between the two harbours, the 15th-century crusader Castle of St Peter which now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, dominates Bodrum town. Another attraction in Bobrum town is the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the crumbling remains of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The beaches, which can become very crowded during the height of the summer season, offer a range of watersports including scuba diving, windsurfing and jet skiing. Families can also enjoy the two waterparks in Bodrum.
Bodrum has numerous restaurants, while the nightlife is extensive and varied. There are clubs, discos, bars which offer belly dancing floor shows, and the chance to go to 'meyhanes' where the crowd joins in with the local artiste, singing and dancing. Shopping in Bodrum is an adventure, with dozens of shops lining the busy narrow streets, mainly from the bus station down to the marina. There is an extensive, colourful craft market on Tuesdays, and a fruit and vegetable market on Fridays.
