About Limassol
Limassol town has a wide seafront promenade and bustling little shopping streets. Limassol is better known for its nightlife than its cultural sights. Limassol has a fun-loving reputation, with the best nightlife on the island and stages some of Cyprus’s best-known festivals; including the annual Wine Festival in September, when the various wineries offer free samples of their products for ten days, the ten day pre-Lenten Carnival with masquerade parties balls and grand parades, the Limassol Festival in summer and the ancient Drama Festival at Kourion.
Limassol has a new attractive marina. Holiday accommodation and tourist facilities are mainly on the eastern side of Limassol. Here there are a wide range of tavernas, pubs, discos and nightclubs. There are numerous beaches to choose from, with good facilities and cafes and bars. There are some uncrowded beaches particularly on the outskirts of town, such as the sandy beach "Ladies Mile' which is west of the new Limassol harbour. The shops in Limassol offer the full range from modern to traditional and handmade. Visit the busy narrow St Andrews Street, not far from the seafront promenade with its quaint buildings and overhanging terraces, under which there are small shops. Makarios Avenue is where there are many prestigious boutiques and showrooms are located.
Take a tour of one of the wineries around Limassol to witness production and wine taste. By the old port is Limassol Castle, where Richard the Lionheart allegedly married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 and crowned her Queen of England. In the grounds of Limassol Castle is the Medieval Museum of Cyprus with pottery and tombstones, or go to the Limassol Archaeological Museum, with statues and pottery. The Municipal Gardens with small zoo offer a pleasant stroll amidst lush trees plants and shrubs.
For sightseeing go to Kolossi Castle 14 km west of Limassol, which is a fine example of military architecture originally constructed in the 13th century. Alternatively visit Kourion 19 km west of Limassol which is an important ancient city kingdom, and one of the most interesting and spectacular archaeological sites on Cyprus with excavations still bringing new treasures to light.
