Nicosia is situated close to the centre of Cyprus, and has a rich history that can be traced back to the Bronze Age.  Today Nicosia is probably best known as the last divided city in Europe. Nicosia blends its historic past with the bustle of a modern city. The heart of the city is enclosed by 16th century Venetian walls, and is dotted with museums, ancient churches and medieval buildings. About Nicosia

The old walled city of Nicosia is unique, encircled by strong fortress walls built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the enchanting old city is scattered with buildings and monuments of historical interest as well as little shops, cafes and tavernas. In the old city walk through narrow streets with old houses and ornate balconies jut from weather beaten sandstone walls. 'Laiki Yitonia' - Folk Neighbourhood - is a pedestrian section, which has been carefully renovated to evoke the atmosphere of past days, and is where local artisans and craftsmen display their wares along cobblestone lanes. Here too bougainvillea laced restaurants beckon with the aroma of roast lamb and Greek coffee.

The two main streets of old Nicosia, Ledra and Onasagorou, are lined with shops of every type. Visit the unique Cyprus Museum, which holds the most important collection of Cypriot antiquities and treasures from the Neolithic Age to the Roman Period. Visit the 'Levention' Municipal Museum for an imaginative presentation of Nicosia history. See the award winning renovated 'Pyli Ammochostou' - Famagusta Gate - one of the original entrances to old Nicosia city. Many old churches are to be found in this part of town, other places of interest include the Folk Art and Byzantine Museums and the Cathedral of Ayios Ioannis with its beautiful frescoes.

The Green Line dividing the city has become something of a tourist attraction. The humourless guards manning the Ledra Palace checkpoint allow tourists to visit the north on day-trips. The modern city that has developed outside the walls is a cosmopolitan centre of business and culture. Nicosia is regarded as the shopping heart of Cyprus with good shopping in Arch Makarios Avenue, Stasikratous Street, and Ledra Street. There are a variety of restaurants, discos and bars.

Close to Nicosia are the l2th century painted church of Asinou, the picturesque monasteries, Makheras, Ayios Iraklidios, the regal tombs at Tamassos, the ancient city-kingdom of Idalion and the enchanting villages of Fikardou and Kakopetria.
