About Split

Split is a city that grew out of the Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, built around 300 AD, it is now a place where ancient times live along side the rhythm of the twentieth century. Diocletian’s Palace covers 3.5 hectares of Split’s centre and is one of the most unique constructions in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Split’s centre is a labyrinth of narrow streets and grand squares paved in glossy white flagstones. Split is full of little nooks, crannies and has a range of historical monuments, chic shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, lively markets, and art.
Split and the surrounding tourist areas have theatre festivals and open-air extravaganzas in the summer. The scenic atmosphere created by the natural stages of the promenades, Roman facades and mediaeval palaces is unsurpassable.

There is a tremendous opportunity for sightseeing in and around Split. At the entrance to the city of Split are ruins of the ancient Salona, once the capital of the Roman province Dalmatia and the biggest archaeological area on the eastern Adriatic coast. It is worth heading to Trogir town-museum, a UNESCO site. North of Split, on the way to Sinj, is the fortress of Klis which was built to defend the region from the Turkish invasion. There are three big Marian shrines only 30 km away from Split dedicated to Our Miraculous Mother of Sinj, Our Little Mother of Solin and the shrine at Vepric. The world famous shrine Meugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is 130 km away from Split. Visit the islands of Hvar, Brac, and Vis, with their rich history and tradition, and unique natural beauty.
