Perpignan Sightseeing

Perpignan is 40km from Spain and 13km from the Mediteranean. Perpignan is a farm trade centre, handling wine, fruits, and vegetables. Perpignan is a beautiful historic town with numerous attractions including churches, monuments and museums Perpignan was founded in the 10th century, Perpignan was the fortified capital of the Spanish kingdom of Roussillon .Its architecture has a great deal of Spanish influence, with Perpignan's most interesting building’s being the Gothic Loge de Mer which is covered with gargoyles and over fussy balustrades and was designed to hold the city's stock exchange and maritime court, the fourteenth-century Gothic Cathédrale St-Jean on place Gambetta which has an elaborate interior of Catalan altar pieces and a tortured wooden crucifix of the Dévôt Christ, and the Palais des Rois de Majorque (Palace of the Kings of Majorca) which is a beautiful building located in Perpignan city centre.

The Arab and Romany quarter in Perpignan is a maze of narrow streets full of North African shops and cafés and a daily market. The local wines from Estagel and Rivesaltes can be sampled here. There are some fabulous beaches a short distance from Perpignan.  Canet Plage is one of the jewels of the Catalan coast and is a favourite resort for people living and staying in the city. It has a long sea front esplanade where street vendors set up their stalls at nightfall. Canet Plage has excellent water sports facilities including sailing, diving, water skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing.  Outdoor activities include beach clubs, an Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, a riding centre and cycle trails. There is Sea World Aquarium aquarium with over 300 species of fish and sea mammals from five continents.

All the beaches around Perpignan are excellent, offering acres of sand in Argelés-sur-Mer or the rocky coastline at Collioure which is a small beach town virtually undiscovered by tourists, where you can dive along a special underwater trail. The whole coast near to Perpignan is host to water sports at all levels of ability, with the serious surfers heading for St Cyprien just above Argelés.  Leucate Plage is just north of Perpignan. At Port Leucatethere is one kilometre of fine golden sand with calm waters and a shore which shelves gently into the sea making it a safe place to bathe and popular with families. Cap d’Agde is a purpose built resort most notable as the home of France’s largest naturist beach. The whole of this coast has long stretches of sand all the way to La Grand Motte just beyond Montpellier down to Argelés. Perpignan Golf

You can play golf at Perpignan in the beautiful St Cyprien Golf Course www.golf-st-cyprien.com which is just south of Perpignan, half a mile from the beach and with the Pyrenees as its backdrop.  It offers a choice of 18 holes or 9 holes courses. They are suitable for experienced and inexperienced golfers with some difficult but enjoyable water hazards. The courses are open from 1st June to 30th September from 08.00 to 20.00 and for the rest of the year from 08.00 to 18.30.

Perpignan Surrounding Area

There are plenty of villages and resorts to visit in the Perpignan area. Canet has an excellent blue flag beach. Canet is known for its water sports facilities and picturesque lagoons, which teem with bird life. Saint Cyprien consists of old hotels and apartments that are a bit faded in a charming way and where there are nice restaurants. Argelès-sur-Mer, comprises Argeles Ville, with a good range of shops and the more modern and bustling resort of Argeles Plage, with its long sandy beaches.
