Driving in Cape Verde

Traffic drives on the right and seat belts are compulsory and children under the age of 12 must ride in the rear of the car. Road conditions vary greatly. There are over 2,250km of roads on the islands, of which one-third are cobbled, paved roads are mostly narrow and winding. There is a road improvement programme underway. The typical local transport is the aluguer, usually a mini-bus or truck, used by both locals and visitors to travel the islands. Cars are also available for hire, but book in advance wherever possible.
