Driving is improving in Turkey, but care needs to be taken in areas such as Istanbul and Ankara. You must be aware that Turkish drivers will do some things you are not accustomed to. Turkish drivers will rarely signal, and pull in front of you with no warning, so much caution is needed. Pedestrians do not pay that much attention to vehicles and may walk out in front of you without warning.
It is still commonplace in Turkey to use horse and carts on roads; they travel at anytime day or night and rarely use lights of reflective gear.
In Turkey they have a religious holiday called Ramadan (ramazan). During this holiday they neither eat nor drink or use any stimulants of any kind. This may affect there driving capabilities and it would be wise to make yourself aware of the dates for this holiday period. During Ramadan Turkey has its highest accidents rates.
It is mandatory in Turkey, including rental cars to have the following items within the vehicle:
1. A first Aid Kit
2. Reflective warning triangle.
You should always carry your vehicle registration documents, insurance policy and national or international driving licence. If you feel unsure to carry these with you at all times then you should use copies. If you are involved in an accident you will have to provide all three original copies and you passport, or a national identity card.
