CITY DESCRIPTION
Berlin is the capital of Germany, has a population of about 3.4 millions and is the largest city of Germany and the second largest of Europe.
With 153 museums, such as the Old National Gallery on the Museum Island, the Jewish Museum with a standing exhibition of 2000 years of Jewish history and the Museum of Technology, Berlin offers culture for every taste. The Brandenburg Gate, Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and TV Tower are just a few sights that are interesting. There are also 50 theatres, three major opera houses and seven symphony orchestras. For outside activities are two zoos, a botanic garden and various parks, lakes and riversides, where one can go for walks, sunbathing or a day out with the family.
Because of the split of the cities, Berlin has two fully developed city centres. There is the famous Kurfürstendamm, the City-West, leading into the Tauentzienstraße where the luxurious department store KaDeWe has its home, the Schloßstraße in the South West and the colourful Bergmannstraße in Kreuzberg. In the East, there is the Hackescher Markt for everything but mainstream, the Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße for exclusive shopping and the only other branch of the Galeries Lafayette. Right in the centre are the Potsdamer Platz Arcades, which are surrounded by cinemas and modern buildings, forming the new sky-line of Berlin.
Three airports connect Berlin to all important cities across Europe and many in the world. The Hauptbahnhof, the biggest train station in Europe, also provides an excellent connection. The wide public transport network consists of the urban rail, underground, tram and of course busses which bring you quickly to your destination within the city or to neighbouring cities as Potsdam. For short breaks, the Baltic Sea is just a two hour drive away.
Berlin is not just more affordable for students. Property prices and rents are lower than in most other big cities across Europe and well below cities as London, Paris and Munich. Berlin is still growing and developing, rent is slowly increasing and new properties are built. The time to invest in a property in Berlin, is right now.
